Built Into the Process

Most building designers produce plans and coordinate with certifiers and engineers as external consultants, usually late in the process, often after decisions have already been made that are difficult to reverse.

 

At Buildingwise Developments, that knowledge is built in from day one.

 

Every project is reviewed at each design stage by registered building surveyors and a licensed builder. Not as a final check before lodgement. Throughout the process, from the first sketch to the completed drawing set.

 

That means compliance issues, buildability problems, and approval risks are identified and resolved before they become costly. A problem caught at the 5% design stage costs almost nothing to fix. The same problem discovered during construction can cost tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

 

Most clients do not know that a design can pass Development Application approval but still fail at the Construction Certificate stage. They do not know that a heritage consultant can be wrong about what the Building Code of Australia allows. They do not know how much difference it makes to have that knowledge applied from the start.

Our Story - Kurt - Building Designer & Building Surveyor

Kurt Moroney began his career with a carpentry apprenticeship in 2005, working hands-on across construction projects and gaining real-world experience in how buildings really go together. Over the years that followed, he developed qualifications in building design and building surveying, eventually working across residential and commercial development in Australia and internationally, including projects associated with Defence and government infrastructure. Kurt has also had 21 years of service in the Australian Army, including multiple deployments and many aid programs across Australia.

 

That progression across construction, then design, then compliance is not a typical career path. Most designers have not spent years on the tools. Most building surveyors have not come through design. Kurt has worked across all of it, and that breadth shapes the way Buildingwise Developments approaches every project.

 

The practice was built on a straightforward observation: most compliance and buildability problems are not hard to fix at the design stage. They become hard and expensive when they are caught later. Kurt had seen that play out enough times to build a practice specifically designed to prevent it.

 

Outside of work, Kurt is most likely out with his young family, riding through New Lambton, Adamstown, Hamilton, Broadmeadow, and into the Newcastle CBD, down to the foreshore and along to Nobbys Beach or Bar Beach, sometimes stopping at the breakwall to walk out to the lighthouse or let the kids look for shells on the beach. If friends are visiting from out of town, it is usually a wine tour through the Hunter Valley. He has completed a Sydney to Hobart yacht race, a string of fun runs, and various other challenges along the way. He will tell you the region has more to offer than most people realise, and that the best way to find out is to ask someone who actually lives here.

 

Our Story - Peter - Building Surveyor & Licensed Builder

Every project at Buildingwise Developments is reviewed by Peter Moroney, a registered building surveyor and licensed builder with more than four and a half decades of hands-on construction and certification experience.

 

Peter's involvement is not a final sign-off. He reviews projects throughout the design process alongside Kurt, contributing building surveying and licensed builder knowledge at every stage. That continuity of review, from early design through to completed documentation, is what the process is built around.

 

Outside of work, Peter and his wife spend a lot of time exploring the region. Walks through Lambton Park, which Peter will tell you is like an oasis in the middle of the city, drives up through the Hunter Valley and its vineyards, and mornings on the local beaches when the weather is right. Peter coaches a junior rugby league team in Newcastle, and spent years playing cricket with Adamstown Rosebuds, taking on teams at grounds from Wallsend to Merewether and everywhere in between, the kind of Saturday afternoons where the best conversations happen after the game.

 

Our Story - The Team

Behind Kurt and Peter, Buildingwise Developments has a specialist team that brings architectural design expertise alongside structural and engineering knowledge.

 

Along with Kurt and Peter’s credentials, the rest of the team also holds qualifications, including a Bachelor of Design (Architecture) and Master of Architecture from the University of Newcastle, alongside a Cert IV in Structural Design and a background in engineering.

 

That combination within a regional practice is uncommon. It means every project is considered at a design level as well as a compliance level, and that the people working on your project bring a depth of capability that most building design practices in this market, regardless of size, cannot match.

 

Where We Work

Buildingwise Developments is based in Newcastle and works across the full Hunter region, from the coastal suburbs and beaches around Newcastle and Port Stephens, through Lake Macquarie, and inland through Maitland, the Hunter Valley, and the broader valley surrounds.

 

Kurt and Peter have been part of the building industry across Newcastle and the Hunter for decades. The projects have taken them across the full breadth of the region, from the established residential streets of Hamilton, Adamstown, and New Lambton, through to the coastal end of the city, the growing commercial precincts around Broadmeadow and the Newcastle CBD, the waterfront suburbs of Lake Macquarie, and further out through Maitland, Port Stephens, and the Hunter Valley. That depth of on-the-ground experience across such a varied region is not common, and it informs every project the practice takes on.

 

Both Kurt and Peter are genuinely part of the community here. Between the two of them, that means decades of involvement in local cricket clubs and football clubs, in charity events, and in the kind of day-to-day life that makes this part of NSW what it is. The Hunter is not just a place they work. It is home.

 

For the right project, Buildingwise Developments works across broader NSW. Active work has extended as far north as Kempsey, around three hours from Newcastle.
